Foods For The Brain

Eating well is good for your mental as well as your physical health. The brain requires nutrients just like your heart, lungs or muscles do. But which foods are particularly important to keep our grey matter happy?

Wholegrains1. Opt for wholegrains

Like everything else in your body, the brain cannot work without energy. The ability to concentrate and focus comes from the adequate, steady supply of energy - in the form of glucose in our blood to the brain. Achieve this by choosing wholegrains with a low-GI, which release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, keeping you mentally alert throughout the day. Opt for 'brown' cereals, wheatbran, granary bread and brown pasta.

Mackerel
2. Eat oily fish

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) cannot be made by the body and must be obtained through diet. The most effective omega-3 fats occur naturally in oily fish as EPA and DHA. Good sources include linseed (flaxseed) oil, soya bean oil, pumpkin seeds, walnut oil and soya beans. They are good for healthy brain function, the heart, joints and general wellbeing. Oily fish contains EPA and DHA in a ready-made form, which enables the body to use it easily. The main sources of oily fish include salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers. Low DHA levels have been linked to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and memory loss.

Blueberry3. Binge on blueberries

Evidence accumulated at Tufts University in the United States suggests that the consumption of blueberries may be effective in improving or delaying short term memory loss. Widely available, so there's no excuse.

Tomatoes
4. Eat more tomatoes

There is good evidence to suggest that lycopene, a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes, could help protect against the kind of free radical damage to cells which occurs in the development of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's.

Runners5. Add vitality with vitamins

Certain B vitamins - B6, B12 and folic acid - are known to reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood. Elevated levels of homocysteine are associated with increased risk of stroke, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. A study of a group of elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment found that after two years of intervention with high doses of B6, B12 and folic acid there was significantly less brain shrinkage compared to a subset given placebo treatment.

Blackcurrants6. Get a blackcurrant boost

Vitamin C has long been thought to have the power to increase mental agility. One of the best sources of this vital vitamin areblackcurrants.

Pumpkin seeds7. Pick up pumpkin seeds

Just a handful of pumpkin seeds a day is all you need to get your recommended daily amount of zinc, vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills.

Broccoli8. Bet on broccoli

A great source of vitamin K, which is known to enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower.

Sage9. Sprinkle on sage

Sage has long had a reputation for improving memory and although most studies focus on sage as an essential oil, it could be worth adding fresh sage to your diet too.

Walnuts
10. Go nuts

A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiologysuggests that a good intake of vitamin E might help to prevent cognitive decline, particularly in the elderly. Nuts are a great source of vitamin E along with leafy green vegetables, asparagus, olives, seeds, eggs, brown rice and wholegrains.

3 E-Z steps to clean all your fruits and vegetables in seconds!

Healthy Living Phoenix Tip of the Day

3 E-Z steps to clean all your fruits and vegetables in seconds!

Cleaning all your fruits and vegetables can contribute to your health, even ORGANIC. Everybody knows water alone is not enough to cut the pesticides, oils, toxins and bacteria. You know the word "ORGANIC" means the poisons are on the outside of the food, not the inside or systemically applied. When the pesticides are put on the ground they are absorbed inside the plant. No amount of washing will get what's on the inside off.

Today certified organic growers can use over 400 chemicals and still call the food organic. Well you know, everyone is in business to make money and the farmers can’t let the bugs eat up their profits. So we can’t blame them for using pesticides. By the way the word “cides” means kills.

I have been growing my own food, buying it from the local farmers market or buying organic, just like my mother did all of my life. Believe me it makes a difference to your health. Our bodies need those vital minerals to make hormones, which feed glands, which keeps your vital organs healthy much longer.

When we consume all those extra toxins and poisons it just makes our already overburdened body systems work harder. The body has to clean before it can heal. It just makes sense to clean everything we eat before we place it in our body. I even soak all my meats in sea salt, not ground meats. We do not consume a lot of meat but when we do, it is organic and it is always soaked first for at least 20 minutes.

It only takes seconds to remove the pesticides and toxins off produce.
I use these 3 EZ Steps to clean all my fruits and vegetables:

1.     Fill a large bowl with water. Add a few drops of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide (most health food stores carry in bottles from 8 oz. to a gallon size) See my posts about 35% H2O2, it is absolutely amazing stuff!

2.I also add a teaspoon or so of sea salt. Let it soak in this solution for a few minutes. Rinse and eat clean, pesticide free vegetables and fruits. You can really taste and see the difference.

3. I add a few drops of Dr. Bronners Pure Castile Soap. It is made with organic oils. I like the lemon. It has no foaming agents or toxic chemicals in it. It has multiple uses, I love it and it is by far the best I have ever found in the World!

One tip for you, don’t clean the produce until you are ready to consume the produce within a day or two. Once you remove the coating off, it will spoil much quicker. Stay well and take care, I care!

Fooled by Food Labels

Everybody knows food labels these days are very misleading. They want us to think we are really getting something healthy when just the opposite is true. What are some of the things we need to look out for?

1. The word "NATURAL"
We see this word all over in the grocery store. So what does the word natural actually mean?
Here's what Webster says:
nat·u·ral
ˈnaCH(ə)rəl/
adjective
  1. 1.
existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind.
"carrots contain a natural antiseptic that fights bacteria"
  2. 2.
of or in agreement with the character or makeup of, or circumstances surrounding, someone or something.
    "sharks have no natural enemies"

It drives me crazy to see a box, bag or bottle that isn’t covered with labels touting the food’s nutritional merits. The most confusing labels are “natural,” “made with 100 percent natural ingredients” and “all natural.” I wish I could trust those words when I see them, but I can't.

What do those labels actually mean? "Largely whatever the food manufacturer – and its marketing division – want it to mean", says Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University and author of “Food Politics."
"No regulatory agency has settled on a definition of “natural,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does have some parameters food manufactures must follow when using the term," says FDA spokeswoman Jennifer Corbett Dooren. The FDA considers “natural” to mean the food does not contain added colors, artificial flavors or synthetic substances. Really, I think it still isn't quite right. With so many different names for these ingredients, and of course they are constantly changing, how in the WORLD CAN YOU BE SURE??????
"Fortunately for food manufacturers – and unfortunately for consumers – that leaves a lot of wiggle room," says registered dietitian Wesley Delbridge, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
Would you believe foods that say “natural” can contain added sugar, trans fats and genetically modified ingredients, or GMOs. It doesn't assure you it's organic, grass-fed or free-range. Most are and can be deep-fried, loaded with salt, preservatives, covered in sugary icing and/or filled with artificial ingredients, Even worse filled with synthetic ingredients, basically "JUNK".
“At present, the word ‘natural’ in food marketing is meaningless, and that’s the way food companies want it,” says Gary Ruskin, executive director of U.S. Right to Know, a nonprofit organization that promotes transparency within the food industry. “It’s a swindle. It’s a scam. It’s a term crafty marketers use to make you buy something.”
This is just plain scary:  One 2014 Harris Interactive survey found that 62 percent of supermarket shoppers seek out “natural,” “all natural” or “100 percent natural” when looking for healthy choices. Another 2014 survey, this one from Consumer Reports, shows about two-thirds of respondents stating they believe the term “natural” means that a food has no artificial ingredients, pesticides or genetically modified organisms. THINK AGAIN!
This won't surprise you:
  • A new study published in the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing shows that consumers are increasingly filing lawsuits against food manufacturers using the term “natural.” In 2009, 30 percent of newly launched foods claimed to be natural but by 2013 this dropped to 22 percent, possibly due to an increase in the number of consumer lawsuits,” wrote the authors, explaining that “lawyers are increasingly willing to take cases which regulatory agencies have abandoned."

  • In 2014, in response to a series of lawsuits over “natural,” the FDA said it didn’t have the resources to devote to defining the term once and for all. The administration’s letter to the courts explains, “At present, priority food public health and safety matters are largely occupying the limited resources that FDA has to address foods matters … Because, especially in the foods arena, FDA operates in a world of limited resources, we necessarily must prioritize which issues to address.”
Looks like to me the food industry is just like everybody else, it's all about the money! Putting natural on the label, gets us all to just spend more of our hard earned money because "we think" its a better choice. Next time remember, natural may be natural all right, but is it healthy?  Oil or black gold as many call it, is "natural", is used to make gasoline. Arsenic is "natural". There are many "natural" elements such as mercury, lead, and cadmium! These are toxic in various concentrations to both plants and animals. Even tho they are indeed "natural:, they are not healthy to you and me.

We are all getting more toxins in our diets than our bodies know what to do with. That's why I detox on a regular basis. It does make a difference and those toxins can add up to big trouble PDQ!
